We have a very exciting show to announce for the Bynum Music Series! On Friday, May 21st at 7 pm we will be hosting "the Chester Sisters: "Minnie" (Brenda White), "Martha" (Alice Zincone), "Maybelle" (Virginia Ryan) and "Mertie" (Drew Lassiter) along with "Ralph Duffy" (Jim Collier) and "Homer Pride" (Tommy Edwards) singing songs from Ellen Bland's play "Millworker."

The play is partly based on oral histories included in the book "Like a Family: The Making of a Southern Cotton Mill World" produced by the Southern Oral History Program at UNC Chapel Hill. Selecting the Bynum General Store as a location for presening music from the play seems particularly appropriate since Bland also drew upon stories she heard from former Bynum millworkers and close friends when she previously resided in Bynum.

At the show, Bland will discuss the play and will present historical commentary to accompany the songs. Named by the Raleigh News and Observer as one of the ten best theatre events in the triangle area during 2003, ÒMillworkerÓ was revived in 2004 due to popular demand and has repeatedly sold out performances. In response to a barrage of inquiries from historical societies across the state, the play subsequently went on tour to such places as Gastonia, Charlotte, and Hillsborough.

The Independent Weekly's April "Band of the Month," the Big Fat Gap will also be performing.

Cover charge will be collected "pass the hat" with a suggested donation of $3 -$5 per person or $5 - $7 per family. The show happens rain or shine (we just move indoors when it rains) and kicks off at 7 pm.

Folks should bring folding chairs. Picnics are welcome though the audience is encouraged to buy a little something to help support the Bynum General Store since Bynum community members originally began the Bynum Music Series in 2001 as a way of trying to keep the store open. Seating is limited, so folding chairs are also encouraged.

We are a grassroots based music series with a mission and hope that our efforts will continue accomplishing the following objectives:

-Lend musicians a comfortable setting to test new material and to gain more public exposure.

-Expose audiences to a variety of artistic styles and traditions that they might not otherwise encounter.

-Bind the Bynum and surrounding community more tightly together by offering them a weekly event where they may congregate on a regular basis.

-Foster a greater appreciation of Bynum as a unique location and encourage a desire to help us preserve it.

-Help bring more business into the Bynum General Store (owned by Bynum original, Jerry Partin) as a way to help it remain open in the face of competition from larger grocery store and convenience store chains.

The Bynum General Store is located at 950 Bynum Road, just 10 miles south of Chapel Hill off of Highway 15-501.
